How should a person be sheila7/6/2023 She begins questioning her desire to be Important, her quest to be both a leader and a pupil, and her unwillingness to sacrifice herself. Along the way, Sheila confronts a cast of painters who are equally blocked in an age in which the blow job is the ultimate art form. Inspired by her friend Margaux, a painter, and her seemingly untortured ability to live and create, Sheila casts Margaux as material, embarking on a series of recordings in which nothing is too personal, too ugly, or too banal to be turned into art. How Should a Person Be? is a novel of many identities: an autobiography of the mind, a postmodern self-help book, and a fictionalized portrait of the artist as a young woman - of two such artists, in fact.įor reasons multiple and mysterious, Sheila finds herself in a quandary of self-doubt, questioning how a person should be in the world. Longlisted for the Women's Prize for Fiction, and selected as a New York Times Notable Book and Huffington Post Best Bookįrom the internationally acclaimed author of The Middle Stories and Ticknor comes a bold interrogation into the possibility of a beautiful life. Ashley antoinette the cartel7/6/2023 The stakes have never been this high, and rules of the game have never been this hard to manipulate. The Cartel’s plan to open a casino will rake in cash, but comes with great sacrifice. A city built on obscene wealth and corrupt deals, cunning entrepreneurs, and the ruthless mob. The Cartel series is back…and more deadly than ever. I wanted to like him but he was FULL of dog poop. What is he like 10 or something.Īnd Miamor deaded Fly Boogie lmao oh well he deserves it. The lives of christopher chant7/6/2023 Never simplistic, Jones rarely creates a wholly good or wholly evil character. Christopher learns much more than magic-including how he appears to others and what those others are behind their masks, magic and otherwise-as well as loyalty and compassion. Meanwhile, back in 12A, he becomes the Chrestomanci's ward and heir and discovers how he has been used by the evil forces-just in time to make some clever, and daring, rescues. Exploring other worlds, Christopher is made the dupe of illicit smugglers of dragon's blood and mermaid parts. Christopher (who appears as a full-fledged magician in Charmed Life, etc.) is here an apprentice with access to an array of parallel worlds: in one (12B, recognizably ours), technology began its vigorous growth in the 14th century in Christopher's (12A), a complex system of available magic seems to be as luxuriant and fascinating (or daunting) as technology is in 12B. An incredibly inventive fantasist inundates the reader with a cascade of magic, so artfully deployed that it never threatens to weigh down her buoyant story. Book zucked7/6/2023 The stuff they were spreading was uniformly inappropriate, it was misogynistic, it was disinformation.Īnd then a month later, I saw a report that Facebook had expelled a company that was using its advertising tools to gather information about people interested in Black Lives Matter and selling that data to police departments. In January 2016 I saw things coming out of Facebook groups ostensibly associated with the Bernie Sanders campaign. When did you first realise that things had taken a turn for the worse? He sold her on the company and they became a team. He wanted a chief operating officer and I suggested Sheryl Sandberg, and persuaded her to meet with Mark. It turned out that the reason he was coming to see me was that a company had offered a billion dollars for Facebook and everyone had told him to accept it. And I said, look, if you believe in your dream, I hope you’ll tell them no. So I met him, and before he said anything I told him that I was afraid somebody was going to try to buy the company, they were going to pay a billion dollars and everybody was going to tell him to take the money. I thought that represented a staggering success. Stone Fox by John Reynolds Gardiner7/5/2023 Willy ran Searchlight so hard and long for the race that the dog's heart burst. Willy should be locked up for animal abuse. really? )Īnd then we get to that shit ending. It was about a 2.5 star book - pretty bland writing, characters telling rather than showing, and a fairly unbelievable plot (ten year old handles an entire farm in his own. I'm so angry with the author about that ending. Will Willy win? Or will Willy lose the farm? Stone Fox, an Indian who races dogs, also entered. The farm is going under (Grandfather hasn't paid taxes in years) and the only way Little Willy can come up with the money is to enter himself and Searchlight into a dog sled race. Willy holds down the farm, brings in the crops and cares for his depressed grandfather all at the tender age of ten, with the help of his faithful dog, Searchlight. Little Willy's grandfather gives up on life. Young William needs to save the farm, the crops and above all, his grandfather.Īlso me: They call him Little Willy. A book to be read with dignity and grace. I honestly have not gotten whiplash like that in years. This, the authors argue, opens the way for denial of basic rights and all manner of egregious practices - in the name of God. The Cairo Declaration on Human Rights in Islam (1990), the papal encyclical Mulieris Dignitatem (1988), and the Southern Baptist Convention’s “Faith and Mission Statement” amendment (1998) are all sharply criticised for the ways they reinforce the subordination of women. Later chapters offer a rigorous critique of the way the language of “rights” is increasingly used to close down debate of religious custom and belief, blocking freedom of speech if it involves anything that sounds like criticism. The passion sustaining this book is not traditional left-of-centre hostility to religion, but white-hot rage at how religion and God are used to justify the unjustifiable. In God’s name, women are buried alive, beaten to death, gang-raped, degraded, and tortured. Does God hate women? Well, as the authors pile up the evidence, it certainly looks like it. SUCH is the visceral horror of the opening pages of this book that you may find it hard to read further.
